What is Mindful Parenting?
Mindful Parenting is the state when parents are active in present situation and not delve much in the past or think too much about the future. They are mindful in activities of children and their surroundings – their friends, parents of friends, teachers, school and social.
Features and Benefits of being mindful Parent
Compassionate towards children:
Parents should be compassionate and need to first understand their child in terms of their wants, likes and dislikes and desires. Instead of reacting instantly towards a child for their action or thoughts, parents should first take control of temperament, sit down with their child and try to deviate their mind on to something so that they focus their mind on to something else; or even teach them the right and wrong by engaging in playful activities.
Listening proactively
Parents should be active around child’s surroundings. Instead of doing helicopter parenting up on children, parents should understand their intent and step in beforehand in support of the children if they think anything suspicious. Parents need to give open-hand to children to take small decisions but should monitor them in every step. It is not always necessary for the child to understand that parents are watching them.
Allow limited access to electronic gadgets
Children learn from actions and this is highly recommended. This can be watching cartoons, videos, movies, e-books and other electronic medium.
Parents should have access to what children are watching and can impose parental control on the electronic gadgets. With this, children get limited access to what they watch on gadgets. If the child is getting access to their friends’ gadgets, this too needs to be monitored. If child is getting access to information which is absolutely wrong, parents should raise the alarm by either informing school authority or the parents of child’s friends.
Self management
It is utmost important that parents should possess self control themselves to have full control over their children. Parents need to be conscious and proactive in how they do parenting. Children learn first from their parents and siblings over social circles.
With self management skills, parents can gain:
a. self control or, control over temperament
b. proactive parenting, and
c. time management
Self management skills can be imparted to children from 7 years of age onwards, which helps them in personal and cognitive development.
